No one person is too small to make a difference to our planet. Reducing your environmental footprint, even in a simple way, can achieve great things for generations to come. In light of Plastic Free July, we are sharing some easy ways you can go low-plastic and reduce your environmental footprint in a high-plastic world.
1. Plan ahead.
Whether it be packing a home-made lunch, bringing a market bag with you in the car, or keeping a reusable water bottle with you at all times, planning is one of the most significant factors when aiming to minimise your plastic waste. Schedule reminders to get items in place to set you up for success throughout your day.
2. Say no to plastic bags.
Most supermarkets have removed single-use plastic bags; however, purchasing a reusable bag each trip to the store isn’t the answer. Opt for a reusable canvas bag over plastic as it will last you much longer, is easier to wash if needed, and has a lower carbon footprint. Many canvas market bags are available with matching mesh produce bags for smaller items such as fresh fruit and vegetables, making it even easier to reduce your plastic waste each trip.
3. Skip straws
"It's only one straw," said 8 billion people. By 2050 it's estimated that there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Single-use straws are not recyclable or biodegradable, and they can cause serious harm to marine life. If you require a straw, keep paper or metal ones in your handbag or car.
4. Plan to stay hydrated.
When you drink out of a plastic bottle, you risk ingesting the chemicals used to make the bottle as these toxins can leach into the water over time. Invest in a reusable water bottle, your body and the planet will thank you for making the switch.
5. Recycle correctly.
This seems like a given, but being mindful when recycling has a significant impact on your carbon footprint. By composting food scraps, sorting recyclables into correct bins and donating used clothing to charity, you can ensure your waste gets a second life.
